How to style your hair with extensions?

If you've made your long-held dream, come true and got hair extensions, the next morning you'll most likely be wondering how to style hair extensions. Probably no one has ever managed to wake up with a hairstyle that looks like it just came from the salon. And, unfortunately, extensions will not change this situation. After all, these are the same natural hair. And it needs care.

How can you be styling natural hair with extensions properly?

If your hair extensions are natural, you don't need to take any different care of them than you would normally. They can be washed well with regular or, even better, sulphate-free shampoo. It’s very important to avoid shampoos with numerous additives, such as oils. Hair masks can also be used, but it‘s better to choose products without an oil base and don’t apply them directly to the root zone. When styling hot, be sure to use thermal protection products.

It's advisable to dry your hair in a natural way. If you use a hairdryer, set the temperature to the lowest setting and avoid directing the airflow directly at the bonds. If you have curly hair, you should dry it without a hairdryer. This way you can get natural, neat waves. To achieve this, braid your damp hair and let it dry. A hairdryer can lead to excessive drying, which will change the natural look of the curls. To create light waves, choose a wave curling iron that will help you maintain the desired texture.
For styling long hair extensions and caring for them, you will need:
  • A comb. Choose a comb with soft and sparse teeth without dots on the tips. Usually, these dots are designed to prevent injury to the scalp during combing, but they will catch on the bonds. So, it's enough to just comb gently. Women with wavy locks can choose combs with different or wavy teeth.
  • Brushes. An indispensable and versatile comb for drying and styling. It can be used to create both straight strands and light curls. It also helps to smooth and hide dry ends of your hair, if any.
  • A hairdryer for drying.
  • Curling irons, straighteners, curlers. All of these can be used. Just remember to use products with thermal protection and avoid contact with hot surfaces with the bonds.

Little tricks on how to style extensions human hair?

Although many people say that caring for hair extensions is as easy as caring for your own hair. However, there are some peculiarities, namely:
  • Combing should start from the ends, gradually moving upwards. Of course, this rule also applies to caring for your own long hair, but it’s an important point when extensions are used.
  • When curling or straightening your hair with a curling iron, avoid contact of hot tools with the bond’s attachment area. When using a straightener, support the strand from above to avoid pulling the bonds.
  • When you need to tighten the curlers, don’t pull them all the way to the roots.
  • Don’t make high ponytails or complex hairstyles until a week after the extension, when the hair has grown a little, so as not to undermine it.
  • You can use a hairdryer. But if you have the opportunity to dry naturally, don't neglect it. And when your hair is about ninety per cent dry, then take a hairdryer and use a brush to style it.
  • Don't overuse straighteners. They dry out your hair quite a lot. Use them only when you really need them. To shape curls, it is better to use a curling iron.
There is one huge advantage how to style hair extensions to look natural. If you did the curls, they will retain their shape until the next time you wash your hair.
